My AC Stopped Working! What to Check Before Calling for Repair

Is Your AC Not Working? First Steps to Troubleshooting at Home

There’s nothing worse than a hot Tennessee day, eagerly anticipating the cool relief of your air conditioner, only to find it blowing warm air or, even worse, doing nothing at all. We get it – it’s frustrating! Before you search for AC repair Murfreesboro or HVAC technician near me, there are a few simple checks you can perform that might solve the problem yourself, or at least help you understand what’s going on.

As Airstream Services, a trusted, locally owned home services company here in Middle Tennessee, we’re committed to providing practical solutions and neighborly care. Let’s walk through the first steps to diagnose your non-working air conditioner.

Step 1: Your Thermostat – The Brain of Your AC System

Often, the simplest issues start with your thermostat. It’s the control center for your entire cooling system, and a quick check here can save you time and hassle.

  • Is it ON? This might seem obvious, but sometimes the thermostat can accidentally be switched off. Double-check it!
  • Mode Setting: Is your thermostat set to “COOL”? Make sure it’s not on “HEAT,” “FAN ONLY,” or “OFF.”
  • Temperature Setting: Is the desired temperature lower than the current room temperature? For example, if your home is 78°F, ensure your thermostat is set to something like 72°F. Your AC won’t kick on if the room is already cooler than your setting.
  • Battery Check: For digital thermostats, low or dead batteries are a surprisingly common culprit. Replace them, even if the display seems fine.
  • Programmable Schedules: Do you have a programmed schedule that might have turned off your AC at an inconvenient time? Override it to see if the unit responds.
  • Fan Setting: Is the fan set to “AUTO” or “ON”? If it’s on “ON” but not cooling, it indicates the fan is running but the cooling cycle isn’t engaged, pointing to a different issue.

Step 2: Investigate Your HVAC Unit – Inside and Out

If your thermostat checks out, it’s time to look at the AC units themselves. Remember, safety first! Never open electrical panels or touch wiring. If you smell gas, see sparks, or hear unusual electrical noises, call a professional immediately.

Your Indoor Unit (Furnace or Air Handler)

  • Air Filter: This is one of the most common reasons for AC issues! A clogged air filter severely restricts airflow, making your system work harder, freeze up, and eventually shut down. Check your filter – if it’s dirty, replace it. We recommend checking your filter monthly, especially during peak cooling season.
  • Drain Pan/Condensate Line: Locate the drain pan beneath your indoor unit. Is it full of standing water? A clogged condensate line can cause water to back up, triggering a safety switch that shuts off your AC. A small amount of water is normal, but a full pan indicates a clog.
  • Vents: Are all your indoor supply and return vents open and unobstructed? Closed vents can create pressure imbalances in your system.

Your Outdoor Unit (Condenser)

  • Power Switch: Is the disconnect switch near your outdoor unit in the “ON” position? This looks like a small box with a lever or switch on the wall next to the unit.
  • Breaker Box: Head to your main electrical panel. Find the circuit breaker labeled for your “AC” or “Furnace/Air Handler.” If it’s tripped (usually halfway between ON and OFF), switch it completely OFF then firmly back to ON. Important: If it immediately trips again, do NOT keep resetting it. This indicates a serious electrical problem and requires professional “electrician near me” or HVAC service.
  • Debris/Obstructions: Walk around your outdoor unit. Is it clear of leaves, grass clippings, dirt, or other debris? Overgrown bushes or clutter can restrict airflow, causing the unit to overheat and shut down. If it’s dirty, gently rinse the coils with a garden hose (with the power to the unit OFF!).
  • Listen: Can you hear any strange noises from the outdoor unit – loud buzzing, grinding, clicking, or nothing at all when it should be running? Unusual sounds can indicate a failing component.

Step 3: What to Do Next – When to Call the Professionals

If you’ve gone through these steps and your AC is still not working, it’s time to call in the experts. These initial checks help us quickly diagnose the issue when we arrive, saving you time and money.

It’s definitely time to call Airstream Services if:

  • Your AC circuit breaker keeps tripping.
  • You hear strange noises or smell burning coming from your unit.
  • You see ice on your indoor or outdoor unit.
  • Water is pooling excessively around your indoor unit, even after checking the drain line.
  • The unit runs, but it’s not cooling or is blowing warm air.
  • You’ve tried all the troubleshooting steps, and your home is still uncomfortably warm.

Our skilled technicians specialize in AC repair, HVAC services, and comprehensive air conditioning repair across the Middle Tennessee region. We’ll provide a safe, accurate diagnosis and expert repair, ensuring your system is running efficiently and reliably.
