Whole-Home Generator Installation In Franklin, TN
Storm rolls through, the street goes dark, and you spend the next two days moving food to a cooler. A standby generator turns that into a few seconds of flicker. We size it honestly — usually smaller than you were quoted elsewhere.
Backup Power That Starts Without You
Middle Tennessee does not lose power gently. Spring brings straight-line winds that drop limbs across the lines along Hillsboro Road and Del Rio Pike, summer thunderstorms knock out single streets at a time, and every few winters an ice event takes out whole neighborhoods for days. The outage itself is rarely the problem — the problem is that nobody is home when it starts.
That is the difference between a portable generator and a standby unit. A portable needs someone in the driveway with extension cords and a fuel can. A standby unit sits on a pad, senses the outage through an automatic transfer switch, starts itself, and carries the circuits you chose until utility power comes back. You find out it happened from the clocks.
- Load calculation first, so the unit is sized to your house and not upsold
- Automatic transfer switch tied into your existing panel
- Whole-home coverage, or essential circuits only if that is the smarter spend
- Pad, gas line and electrical run planned before we quote a number
- Permit pulled, inspection met, and the startup done with you there

Three Versions Of The Same Question
How Big Do I Need?
Almost everyone guesses high. A load calculation usually points at a smaller, cheaper unit.
See how sizing worksWill My Panel Take It?
The transfer switch has to land somewhere. Older Franklin panels are the usual sticking point.

Pad, gas, transfer switch, permit, startup. Two days on site for most homes.

Sized From A Load Calculation, Not A Guess
The single most common way homeowners overspend on backup power is buying capacity they will never draw. Square footage is a poor proxy. What matters is the simultaneous load — what is actually running at the same moment during an outage in July versus one in January.
A two-story home in Fieldstone Farms with two air conditioning systems has a very different peak than the same size house with one. So we measure instead of estimating, then show you two numbers: what whole-home coverage costs, and what essential-circuits coverage costs. Plenty of families look at both and choose the smaller one deliberately, and that is a perfectly good outcome.
| Coverage | What it carries | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Essential circuits | Furnace or air handler, refrigerator, well pump, internet, key outlets and lighting | Most homes, honestly — the lowest cost route to never losing the furnace or the fridge |
| Essential plus one AC | The above, plus one air conditioning system | Families who care most about summer outages but do not need both systems running |
| Whole home | Everything, both AC systems included, no thinking about it during an outage | Larger homes in Westhaven or Ladd Park, or anyone working from home who cannot gamble |
| Whole home with load management | Everything, with smart shedding so a smaller unit still covers the house | Homes wanting full coverage without stepping up to the largest unit — often the best value |

Where Franklin Installs Get Complicated
A standby generator does not connect to your house in the abstract — it connects through an automatic transfer switch, and that switch has to physically land at your panel. This is where the age of the housing stock in Franklin actually matters.
Homes around Downtown Franklin, the Historic District and the older streets off Columbia Avenue frequently still run 100-amp service with a full panel and no spare breaker space. That does not stop the project, but it means a service or panel upgrade is part of the honest quote rather than a surprise on install day. Newer subdivisions — Westhaven, McKay's Mill, Ladd Park, Sullivan Farms — are typically 200-amp with room to work, and those installs are clean.
We check this on the first visit. If your panel needs attention first, we would rather tell you at the quote stage than after the unit is on the pad. Our write-up on panel upgrades in Franklin covers what that work involves, and the Franklin electrician hub lists everything else we do locally.
- Panel and service capacity confirmed before anything is ordered
- Transfer switch location planned around your meter and panel positions
- Sub-panel added where a managed-circuits setup is the better answer
- Whole-home surge protection fitted at the same time where it makes sense

What The Two Days Actually Look Like
Nobody enjoys open-ended projects, so here is the shape of it. The assessment and load calculation happen on the first visit. Once you approve a fixed scope, we pull the permit — City of Franklin for in-city addresses, Williamson County for unincorporated ones — and order the unit.
On site, the pad goes in, the gas line is run and pressure tested, the transfer switch is tied into the panel, and the generator is set and connected. There is one planned power interruption while the switch goes in, and we tell you roughly when. Then we run a live startup test with you standing there, so you have actually seen it work before we leave.
- 1 Assessment and load calculation at your house, with both coverage options priced
- 2 Fixed-scope quote covering unit, pad, gas, transfer switch, electrical and permit
- 3 Permit pulled with the correct jurisdiction for your address
- 4 Pad set, gas run and pressure tested, transfer switch installed
- 5 Inspection met, live startup test witnessed, maintenance schedule explained

Where a house sits in Franklin changes the job. Addresses on the rural west and south sides — out past Carters Creek Pike and the lanes off Southall Road — often have no natural gas service at all, so those are propane installs and the tank sizing becomes part of the conversation. In-town addresses near Main Street and the Historic District usually have gas but the tightest panel constraints and the least room for a pad.
Cool Springs sits differently again: a lot of what we install on that side of Franklin, out toward Carothers Parkway, is light commercial rather than residential, where the priority is keeping servers, refrigeration and card systems alive rather than the whole building. We handle that through our commercial electrical side.
